3-Second Rule: Why Your Site Speed Is Costing You Customers

3-Second Rule: Why Your Site Speed Is Costing You Customers

16 July 2026

Google found that 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Amazon found every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales.

For a South African small business, this means if your site loads in 5 seconds instead of 2, you are losing roughly 30% of potential customers.

The most common causes of slow sites are:

  • Uncompressed images (the biggest offender)
  • Cheap shared hosting
  • Too many plugins
  • No caching
  • Render-blocking JavaScript

The fastest fix is usually image compression and better hosting. Check your site at gtmetrix.com. If it loads in under 3 seconds on mobile, you are ahead of most competitors. If not, fix it before you spend another cent on advertising.
