South African small business websites are a favourite target for hackers. Why? Because most are poorly maintained, running outdated software, and have weak passwords.
Here is how to protect yours:
- Use a strong unique password for your WordPress admin (not admin123)
- Enable two-factor authentication
- Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated
- Install an SSL certificate (the padlock icon)
- Limit login attempts
- Change your login URL from the default wp-admin
- Take regular backups stored off-site
- Use a security plugin like Wordfence or Sucuri
- Choose hosting with built-in security
If your site gets hacked, the cost to clean it is R5,000 to R50,000. Prevention costs R0 with proper maintenance. Do not wait until it happens.
