How to Protect Your Website From Hackers in South Africa

16 July 2026

South African small business websites are a favourite target for hackers. Why? Because most are poorly maintained, running outdated software, and have weak passwords.

Here is how to protect yours:

  • Use a strong unique password for your WordPress admin (not admin123)
  • Enable two-factor authentication
  • Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated
  • Install an SSL certificate (the padlock icon)
  • Limit login attempts
  • Change your login URL from the default wp-admin
  • Take regular backups stored off-site
  • Use a security plugin like Wordfence or Sucuri
  • Choose hosting with built-in security

If your site gets hacked, the cost to clean it is R5,000 to R50,000. Prevention costs R0 with proper maintenance. Do not wait until it happens.
